WLS on 60 Minutes

The Bypass Effect On Diabetes, Cancer, Surgery Can Send Diabetes Into Remission, And May Reduce Risk Of Certain Cancers - CBS News

And here all this time I thought 60 Minutes was a news program.

This crap is nothing but a friggin' infomercial.....

And don't even get me started about the WLS cheerleaders throughout the comments section. Many of them I know. Let them walk a few days in my shoes and see how gung ho they are about WLS then.

I'm too angry now to post what I really think. But rest assured it's coming. Just let me leave you with this thought.

Altering a healthy human body to cure some perceived affliction is nothing new.

It wasn't that long ago they thought a lobotomy would "cure" mental illness.

Oh yeah, and don't even go to the diabetes lists, they're all over this. They seem to think that surgical techniques have improved and only 1 in 1000 die of the surgery now, and it's safe blah blah blah. Makes me want to scream.

I was livid, too. It was pure, unadulterated, inexcusable advertising for bariatrics. It is crucial for people to know that they have not shown that they've cured diabetes. Blood sugars drop post-op - an early symptom of starvation, insufficient energy intake and then weight loss - but there is absolutely no support that they have cured the metabolic dysfunction of diabetes long-term.

I feel nauseous after watching that. much for the good old days when 60 minutes apparently did research before running a piece.

I wish that they'd come and live at our house for a week, and see how in a lot of ways my husband's bypass still runs our lives 3 years later.

I thought of you when I saw the promo for the clip. Not a very balanced piece at all. So disappointing! I don't blame you for being angry. You do what you can to get the word out, and bit fat media giants completely drown it out.

I didn't watch the show because of the topic....just the lead in was enough for me! But I did watch a clip and tried to watch a second one. The first was bad enough, talking about how wonderful this surgery is....but the second one started of with a physician saying that is was wrong that you had to be considered obese (not morbidly obese, just obese) in order to qualify for the surgery, even if you are diabetic and this must change!

Looking forward to your rant!

My mother is having gastric bypass in June and she called me to tell me all these great things about it on 60 Minutes the other day. And how 60 Min is such a respectable program so they must have done a ton of research. I asked her how in the world they could say nothing bad...there are OBVIOUSLY side effects! Didn't they aknowledge them at all?
I read the Fascination thread and remember you mentioning some of your struggles. I told her about your broken toes and the girl you know with the broken hip. Today I come over here to see what else you might have to say, and you have the story up.
I am just so worried about her. I have read many stories on obesity help where relatives are leaving comments that the people have passed away. Some were even like 3 years later, for no apparent reason. My father just had Quadruple bypass last week, and now with my mom....I can't handle it.
